Our plans to improve the A6 Chorley Road started on site on Wednesday 16th October and will be complete by spring 2025
We secured planning permission for the employment site on land to the west of the Wingates Industrial Estate in Westhoughton in 2021. Before we begin construction of the wider employment scheme, we sought permission to realign a short stretch of the A6 Chorley Road in front of the Blue Bell Cottages to provide a new dedicated access to the Wingates employment site. The plans were approved by Bolton Council in 2023.
The plans will move traffic 40m away from homes, creating a new landscaped buffer between the realigned A6 Chorley Road and the properties, which will screen the road and provide a green, planted area for residents to enjoy.
The existing road will be narrowed and retained, providing access to the Blue Bell Cottages, creating a new cul-de-sac which will be shut off to through traffic, improving safety for residents and access for deliveries. The works also include a new signalised junction with comprehensive pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities, new and improved cycle lanes and pavements.
The existing A6 Chorley Road will remain open while the new road is being built adjacent to the existing A6 and private access for vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained during construction. As the construction progresses, traffic control measures will be put in place for safety, such as (temporary) traffic lights.
The work will be carried out by the Bolton based civil engineering contractor, A E Yates Ltd. A new access track is being created directly off the A6 for construction vehicles and dedicated parking will be provided on site for all workers. If you have questions about the construction, you can contact A E Yates public liaison on: 07704 307 004.
Construction times have been agreed with Bolton Council and will not exceed:
Off highway works: 07:30 – 17:30hrs Monday to Friday (no noisy works prior to 8am) and 08:00 – 13:00hrs Saturday (if required).
Highways: 09:30 – 15:30hrs Monday to Friday if any works require lane closures on the carriageway and 20:00-05:30hrs Monday to Friday if any works require resurfacing works with all diversions / traffic restrictions removed and all affected roads open to traffic by 06:00hrs each morning.
Ahead of the construction of the employment buildings for Phase 1, we have now completed works on the ecological enhancement area at Wingates. New habitats have been created to benefit a range of wildlife including birds, amphibians and small mammals. This includes seven new wildlife ponds, wildflower grassland, native tree planting and bat boxes. A further three wildlife ponds will be constructed alongside the A6.
